About
Almaty (Kazakh: Алматы / Almatı, pronounced [ɑl.mɑ.ˈtə]), formerly known as Alma-Ata (Russian: Алма-Ата) and Verniy (Russian: Вѣрный), is the largest city in Kazakhstan.[3] Despite losing its status as the capital to Astana, Almaty remains the major commercial and cultural centre of Kazakhstan, as well as its largest population center. The city is located in the mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan.
